Straight answers to common North Iowa questions about radon testing, Iowa requirements, results and mitigation.
Is radon testing required when buying a house in Iowa?
No. Iowa HHS currently states there is no statewide rule requiring testing or mitigation during every real-estate transaction. Sellers must disclose known radon tests/results and provide the state radon fact sheet.
What radon level is considered high?
EPA recommends action to reduce radon at or above 4.0 pCi/L and advises considering reduction between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L.
How long does a professional radon test take?
Many short-term professional measurements run for at least 48 hours when the governing protocol permits. School, commercial and other projects may use different requirements.
Do Iowa schools have to test for radon?
Yes. Each public-school attendance center must be tested at least once by July 1, 2027 and at least every five years afterward.
Do childcare centers have to test?
Iowa HHS states licensed childcare centers must test within one year of opening and mitigate if levels are above 4.0 pCi/L.
Can a new house have radon?
Yes. Any building can have elevated radon. Iowa now requires passive radon-control methods in applicable new one- and two-family residential construction, but post-construction testing is still the only way to know the occupied level.
Does RadonStead perform mitigation?
RadonStead is launching testing-first. Mitigation installations are offered only after the separate Iowa mitigation eligibility and credential requirements are fully satisfied.
How will I receive my results?
The RadonStead workflow uses a secure client portal for reports, invoices and service history. Production deployment requires secure server-side authentication and document storage.
